International Buddhist Vipassana Meditation Center located in Wellawaya, Sri Lanka.
A spiritually inspired meditation retreat designed to create a calm, peaceful, and natural environment for practitioners. The project includes individual kuti accommodation units, a meditation hall, main kitchen facilities, and accommodation spaces for supporting staff.
Located on a 5-acre site, the design approach focused on preserving the existing trees and natural landscape of the site. Considering the dry climatic conditions of the area, retaining the mature trees was an important part of the design strategy to provide natural shade, improve thermal comfort, and create a cooler environment during hot periods.
The architecture responds to the surrounding nature, creating a harmonious relationship between built spaces and the landscape while supporting the spiritual experience of meditation and reflection.
